Vector Books LLC, based in New York City, was founded in 2020 by Frederic C. Rich. Fred’s first two books, a dystopian political novel and a non-fiction book about environmental politics, were published by an excellent traditional publisher, W. W. Norton & Co. By the time he finished his third book, a novel of ideas, the appetite among trade publishers for fiction of this type had evaporated. Frustrated by this, and by the commoditization of the book and consequential fracturing of the literary marketplace into tightly defined niches, Rich chose to start a small independent press with a distinct mission.
